If you lived together and separated you will not be protected by the legislation that applies to divorce. There is no one law or set of rules which governs this situation. There can be a number of separate issues which are all dealt with, with different sets of rules.

This area of law can be particularly complex and we can provide expert advice in relation to the following:-

• Child maintenance

• Financial provision for children
In addition to child maintenance there are some circumstances in which a parent can obtain financial provision for a child in the form of property or lump sums.

• Home ownership
It is important to seek specialist advice on this issue as soon as possible to ensure that any interest you may have in property is adequately protected.

• Inheritance
If you have not made a Will then property passes according to the rules of intestacy. A cohabitee does not feature in these rules and, therefore, the only protection is by making a claim under the Inheritance (Provision for Family & Dependants) Act 1975.

• Child Arrangements
Arrangements for care of the children upon separation, parental responsibility and disputes in relation to parenting.
